My wife is so confident in her desires, so secure in her tastes, that getting her presents is simply a matter of paying attention, which turns me into the nervous soul who religiously saves receipts, since, despite my best efforts to know what she wants, I’ve wrapped a lime green sports bra, itchy wool scarves, and wind chime earrings — all clear misses, given my limited ability to link things with wishes, to satisfy what is right before me, to divine the expected. Even after years of disappointment, she briefly adorns herself in my failures.
